Quick Pix As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day.
The fifth grade's concert will be presented this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Lower Gym. The fifth graders will be joined by their kindergarten buddies for a couple of songs. Come out and enjoy this last concert of the year.
This morning, Key lower school students were presenting another round of book talks complete with costumes and props. Ben's dog was a scene stealer.
Upper school tae-kwon-do students had their belt-testing program last Friday with instructor Joanne Bartsch. The younger students had their testing earlier.
What's up with these students?
And why is this person 16 feet up the ladder? It's for the 16th Annual Fifth-Grade Egg-Drop Competition. Students were challenged to design, build, and test a contraption that would protect a raw egg from breaking from ever-increasing heights. Students or student teams could only use regular wooden toothpicks and glue for protection. It takes a lot of creativity and scientific know-how to build something that works. These fifth graders are being recognized for most creative design, unique contraption names, special use of color, etc.
And these are the two contraptions that tied at surviving all of those drops to a height of 16 feet. William worked solo and Sarah Margaret and Elizabeth teamed up. Chances are their contraptions would have survived drops of even greater heights--but regulations prohibit employees or parents from using cranes on campus.
The final resting place for most of the egg-drop containers.
The third graders have been busy practicing for their recorder concert in music class. They will be performing for the second graders on Tuesday at 2 P.M. Come out and see how much they've accomplished.
It can't be the end of the year until the pre-kindergarten students have their letter people parade. This colorful event was held yesterday with students representing all the letters of the alphabet. After 36 weeks of intensive study--they were proud to show their stuff.
The third graders this year have had the opportunity to work jointly with the Eco-Team from Warren Wilson College and our own Roots & Shoots Club. Club sponsor Dora Nelson and Roots & Shoots leaders Chase Pickering and Leigh Newman celebrated a year of good work with each student getting to talk about what he or she has learned. They ended the year of activities with a ceremony and a tree planting.
And is it Friday yet? Well, almost. And it's almost time for the year to end for this fifth grader and the other 650 Carolina Day students. And that means Houdini, the mouse, gets to spend his vacation at someone's house.
