Recent Happenings from Around the School
March 9, 2006
As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.
We don't just get excited about sports at CDS! The Upper School held a pep rally for the debate team just minutes before they shoved off for the Tar Heel Forensic League state tournament hosted by Enka High School last weekend. Joel Underwood, debate team coach, led the rally which included a multi-media presentation introducing the entire team and humorously explained the challenges of going up against schools many times our size. A few team members demonstrated their prepared competition material. For results from the tournament and "kudos" to other students and teachers for various recent accomplishments, click this link.
Kudos to...

Joanne Bartsch's biology students "enjoyed" getting hands-on with the inside workings of a heart. We won't go into any details, but feel free to ask any biology student.

Robbie Francis's film class is working on a documentary for the Key School's upcoming performance night. They are learning to use a digital video camera and Microsoft "Movie Maker" software. Their film will be presented at the Key School Play & Talents Festival on April 26.

These Key students are showing off some more of the projects they made for their unit on Europe in the Middle Ages. They are in Maggie McLaney's core class.

P.E. -- It's not just basketball anymore! The eighth graders enjoyed a day of skiing and snowboarding at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort. For many it was their first time on skis or on a snowboard. Lessons were available for those first timers and for others wanting a refresher course. Thanks to Mark Strasser and fellow middle school teachers for providing this experience.

First Grade Conferences. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. So, in the case of the first grade--why not let the kids?
Amazingly, the first graders in Debbie Lanier's classes took control of their own parent conferences and led the discussion this week with their parents.
Ms. Lanier comments that this encourages students to accept responsibility for their academic work, it teaches students the process of self-evaluation, facilitates the development of students' organizational and oral communication skills, increases students' self-confidence, and encourages students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue.
Ms. Lanier was available for a separate private conference with parents if needed or requested.

Is it Friday yet? These Key lower school students think so.
