As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

Yesterday was pizza taste-testing day for these four lucky fifth graders. They got to sample two kinds of pizzas from four pizza bakers in hopes of winning the fifth-grade's charitable fund pizza sales "contract" for this year. Each year the fifth grade sells pizza on Fridays to hungry lower- and middle-school students. Their profits go to charities. Over the years the fifth-grade classes have given away more than $15,000 to local, national, and international charities.

Don't let the plates fool you. The winner this year is Domino's Pizza. Pizza sales will begin next Friday, September 15.

While the quartet above was sampling hot pizza, these two fifth graders were cleaning Bella's cage. And believe it or not, they actually volunteered and looked forward to it. This is part of the responsibility of having classroom pets. In addition to Bella, the rabbit, the fifth graders enjoy the company of Houdini the mouse.

Key School teacher Miguel Flamini is bringing his expertise in music with him to the Key students this year. These guys are enjoying a drumming experience which could joyfully be heard throughout the Key School campus.

Something's up when a crowd gathers in the lower gym...

The lower school community gathered last Friday for the year's first sing-along led by music teacher Jane Corbin. This tradition brings everyone together to enjoy some good old-fashion "camp" music. The second-grade teachers "volunteered" to help Ms. Corbin with some hand and body motions in a rousing rendition of "Michael Row the Boat Ashore."

In most places, the following would be an unusual sight. But not at Carolina Day.

These Canine Fairies descended upon the fourth grade yesterday to a totally surprised audience of students.

The fairies (occasionally seen around the PK classrooms) led the fourth graders in singing that hymn of dog lovers everywhere - "Dog Breath." Fourth graders could be seen and heard panting, scratching fleas, and howling.

And in the end each fourth grader received a toy husky. There was a reason behind the madness. After years of being little buddies to older students, it's now the fourth graders turn to be big buddies to the PK kids. The fourth graders will be joining their PK buddies in the study of the Iditarod Race this year and they'll be presenting these huskies to their buddies on Monday. Shhhhhhhhhhhh!

Last Thursday and Friday was the middle school's turn to go on an overnight. All 150 plus kids and teachers enjoyed the experience which involved dozens of team-building activities.

How NOT to dress! Carolina Day School has a pretty lenient dress code. However, these upper school students are showing what IS NOT allowed. Enough said!
