As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

PK teacher Cathy Walters will leave tomorrow for Alaska as a finalist in the Wells Fargo Teacher on the Trail competition. The fourth graders decided to surprise Ms. Walters with a glorious send-off. They all gathered to sign a banner to decorate the room.

The room was already adorned with a life size replica of Ms. Walters in her winter garb. (Actually it was a musher mannequin complete with dogs from the Mast General Store, but it could have fooled a lot of people.)

And then the fourth graders tip-toed into the PK rooms and "kidnapped" the pre-kindergartners and brought them back to their classroom to finish signing the banner.

Then it was time to dress up like sled dogs. Students had their noses painted and put on their dog ears.

And finally Ms. Walters was escorted into the room. Was she ever surprised!

Here she is posing with her substitute who will fill in while she's at the Iditarod race.

And then the fourth graders and their PK buddies performed their now-famous Iditarod song along with a "sing-after-me" song with actions that all PKers and former CDS PKers know.

Good luck, Ms. Walters!

On Wednesday, the fourth and fifth graders came to the Lower/Middle School Library for a presentation on biodiversity in North Carolina by Ben Prater. Mr. Prater's talk was sponsored by the Math & Science Committee of the Parent Council. Watch for an article in the April issue of Bell Notes.

Key School fourth and fifth graders are experimenting with storm surge and the effects of hurricane waters on shorelines. A good wet time was had by all. This class is getting ready to visit the WLOS news room and Mike Cuevas next week.  So far the Key students' predictions about the weather have been more correct than those of the station.  Hmmmm…maybe there is a future in meteorology for the class members.

It was "pioneer" day last Friday in the first grade. This fellow was dressed for the part.

Don't ask!

Actually, this is Director of Athletics Ernie Lasher in morning meeting urging upper school students to make their way to the production of Grease. The show enjoyed three nights of packed houses. Bravo cast and crew. The photos can be seen by clicking this link.

Each grade has their own way of celebrating birthdays. The youngest students wear these great hats.

So do some of the teachers. This is Debbie Lanier, first grade teacher, a couple of days before her special day.

And it goes all the way up to this senior--celebrating his 18th birthday.

And speaking of birthdays, Cathy Walters brought her PK class across the field last week after her own special surprise. They came over to perform an annual ritual--performing their special "sing after me and do the actions" song with the entire upper school student body following along.

It's a highlight of the day for both our youngest and oldest students.

And back to birthdays. The first grade classes decided Ms. Lanier's birthday was too important to miss. They really surprised her two days ahead of her special day since they knew we would be out for a day off. And since this is a really BIG birthday for Ms. Lanier--they planned a 50s party complete with costumes and old 45 records hanging from the ceiling.

If you haven't guessed how old she is, I can only say--take 200, divide that by 2, add 25, and then subtract 75 and you'll have the number. Or, just ask any first grader.
