Recent Happenings from Around the School

As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

The Key School recently had a landscaping makeover with lots of help from Key parents, teachers, facilities support staff, and other friends of the Key. Mike McCue designed, built, painted, and installed this wonderful new sign which now greets students and visitors as they first arrive. Thanks Mike.

Kathy Willet, a first-grade assistant, and her son Marshall, a sixth grader at the Key School, were recently hosting an orphan from Russia for two weeks. Both first grade classes participated in a project to show compassion. They collected items for Alex to take back to his friends at the orphanage.

A couple of weeks ago the middle school golf team took on challengers Oakbrook Prep and Spartanburg Day School in a tournament. The middle school team came in second and enjoyed a festive gathering for dinner at Fuddruckers to celebrate.

The Middle School held their spring concert last week which included performances by the students as well as a special singing appearance by some teachers and even a "battle of the bands."

Cowboys and cowgirls were abundant in the PK classes recently. Events included a visit by a real-live cowboy (who looks a lot like a parent of a PK student) and a ride around campus on stick horses. Rumor has it that there were some real horses munching grass on the soccer field.

Visiting artist Jeff Menzer was on campus this week working with seventh grade art classes. Mr. Menzer is a "re-artist" specializing in creating new art from used items. After some lecture time, Mr. Menzer and the students spent a few art periods creating original sculptures from recycled metal scrap. These photos happen to be from a boys' class, but yes, the girls had their turn.

These third graders were creating their own artistic sculpture as this photographer was walking by one day. And has luck would have it, this photo was the only one taken to commemorate this piece of work because it collapsed two seconds after this only-existing image was taken.

It was a big day on campus on Tuesday as our own Barb King and Laurie Wilcox-Meyer had a book signing for their new book, Who's Ms. Sand Dollar? - A Visit with the School Counselor." The Friends of the Library hosted the festive event which included bubbles, sand dollar cookies in sugar "sand," a visit by the Who's Ms. Sand Dollar bigger-than-life mascot, and lots of great food.

Carolina Day School celebrated Earth Week and Earth Day in lots of ways this past week. On Monday, several middle school students, teachers, and parents participated in their twice-a-year walk/bike to school day. They capped off their successful human-powered jaunt to CDS with a breakfast.

Nothing like ice cream sundaes to get over ERB testing. Thanks to a bunch of parents for providing the tasty treats for the middle school students.
