Empires of the Word: A Language History of the World - Ostler , Nicholas
Booklist Starred Review: Caesar led his legions into battle for the glory of Rome --and the immortality of Greek. In the curious spread of Greek through Roman conquest, Ostler recounts one of the many fascinating episodes in the complex history of languages. Readers learn how languages ancient and modern (Sumerian and Egyptian; Spanish and English) spread and how they dwindle. The raw force of armies counts, of course, in determining language fortunes but for far less than the historically naive might suppose: military might failed to translate into lasting linguistic conquest for the Mongols, Turks, or Russians. Surprisingly, trade likewise proves weak in spreading a language--as the Phoenician and Dutch experiences both show. In contrast, immigration and fertility powerfully affect the fate of languages, as illustrated by the parallel histories of Egyptian and Chinese. Ostler explores the ways modern technologies of travel and communication shape language fortunes, but he also highlights the power of ancient faiths--Christian and Moslem, Buddhist and Hindu--to anchor language traditions against rapid change. Of particular interest will be Ostler's provocative conjectures about a future in which Mandarin or Arabic take the lead or in which English fractures into several tongues. Few books bring more intellectual excitement to the study of language. Booklist
Exploring the Geology of the Carolinas: A Field Guide to Favorite Places from Chimney Rock to Charleston - Stewart, Kevin G.
How were the Appalachian Mountains formed? Are the barrier islands moving? Where is there gold in the Carolinas ? Find answers to these questions and many more in this reader-friendly guide to the geology of North Carolina and South Carolina . This book pairs a brief geological history of the N.C./S.C. region with 31 field trips to easily accessible, often familiar sites in both states where readers can observe firsthand the evidence of geologic change found in rocks, river basins, mountains, waterfalls, and coastal land formations. Geologist Stewart and science writer Roberson begin by explaining techniques geologists use to "read" rocks, the science of plate tectonics, and the formation of the Carolinas . The field trips that follow are arranged geographically by region, from the Blue Ridge to the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain. from the publisher

Garbage Land : On the Secret Trail of Trash - Royte , Elizabeth
Booklist Starred Review: A visit to the filthy Gowanus Canal near her Brooklyn home got Royte thinking about garbage. What exactly does her family throw out each day? Who carries it away, where is it taken, how is it processed? To find out, she catalogs her daily household garbage and tracks her trash to garbage transit stations, landfills, and recycling plants. Royte's nervy and unprecedented journey through the land of garbage is fascinating, appalling, and--thanks to her keen first-person journalism, commonsense skepticism, and amusing personal asides--downright entertaining. Some of her more troubling disclosures include the hazards of sewage sludge and "e-waste," that is, discarded computers, televisions, and cell phones. Smart and persistent, Royte annoys the heck out of closemouthed government officials and waste-management businesspeople and trespasses when denied access to key sites, enduring foul smells and bad vibes to glean the truth about how waste is handled, who profits from waste, what opportunities are wasted, and how waste can be reduced. What her staggering expose tells us is that as the quantity, variety, and toxicity of our garbage increases, we must, like nature, evolve ways to reclaim and reuse everything we make.

A Left-Hand Turn Around the World: Chasing the Mystery and Meaning of All Things Southpaw - Wolman, David
Why are so many humans right-handed when most animal species show random preferences for one side or another? Is a preference for the left hand an indicator of brain difference? How do developing embryos figure out which side is left, anyway, and why is that information so critical to their development? Wolman's breezy, informative account of "what makes left-handers special" tackles these and other fascinating questions on its journey to finding out what exactly handedness means and why it happens. The author, a proud member of "the fraternity of Southpaw" and a journalist whose work has appeared in New Scientist , Discover and Wired , travels all over the world to find his answers, and his lively tales of visits to the field's top researchers double as solid introductions to the science of handedness. Living Black History: How Reimagining the African-American Past Can Remake America 's Radical Future - Marable , Manning
Lamenting the absence of detailed histories of pivotal African American figures, or analyses that are too superficial and propagandistic, Marable offers a probing look at several historical figures and the civil-rights movement. In his critique of W. E. B. DuBois , Marable exposes much of the myth and conflict between DuBois and Booker T. Washington and exposes them both to be more complex and engaged than most works reveal. Regarding Malcolm X, Marable suggests that Alex Haley's biography and Spike Lee's film are most significant for their slants and omissions. Conflicts surrounding the estate of Malcolm X and the availability of raw material to scholars have further complicated the quest to understand the iconic black leader. Marable's final chapter explores the promise of integrated education of the Brown decision and the reality of hypersegregation that continues to estrange low-income minorities from the American mainstream. Still, Marable hopes that a new civil-rights movement will achieve the promise of Brown by transcending the limitations of popular myth and historical distortions. Booklist

Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior - Martin, Judith
Miss Manners' down-to-earth collection of wisdom and pithy wit is a joy to read. Under the chapter on Table Manners, she notes "the inevitable slippage of spaghetti from the fork back onto the plate is Nature's way of controlling human piggishness " and suggests "a quick motion of the wrist, such as one uses to shake down a thermometer, will remove excess ketchup" from French fries. From common courtesy and proper attire to the etiquette of weddings, Martin knows right from wrong and sensible from rude. But this is no prissy, preachy tome. Miss Manners is very funny and has impressive insight into life. Amazon.com

Rules, Britannia: An Insider's Guide to Life in the United Kingdom - Hargis, Toni Summers
Hargis knows whereof she speaks. She grew up in England and holds a law degree from Bristol University ; today, she's a business writer and resident of Chicago . Her perspective on the difference among U.S. and U.K. cultures is, as a Brit might say, "spot on." The key, in large part, is the language. Familiar terms in our version of English are often unknown in the United Kingdom , and the reverse is equally, if not more, true. Covering a wide range of topics, from the considerable differences among the Welsh, Northern Irish, and Scots-none of whom want to be called "British"-to the structure of British education and the differences among wedding and dining out rituals between the two countries, Hargis ends each chapter with a vocabulary list of British terms and those Americanisms that don't translate across the pond. The book's greatest value will be for those intending an extended stay in Great Britain , but it will prove useful for vacationers planning more than a few days in "old Blighty ." Library Journal
When Baghdad Ruled the Muslim World: The Rise And Fall of Islam's Greatest Dynasty - Kennedy, Hugh
Baghdad was founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliphate, which, claiming its legitimacy from lineage to the family of the prophet Muhammad, had overthrown the Umayyad caliphate. Chronicling the first two of the Abbasids' five centuries of rule, historian Kennedy acquaints nonspecialists with an important segment of Islamic history, perhaps best known to Westerners as the period setting for Arabian Nights . Sensitive to the biases of available sources, Kennedy picks through their panegyrics to political winners or condemnations of losers to present a narrative that realistically outlines the motivations and characters of caliphs, viziers, and even court attendants. He recounts contested successions to the caliphate, with detail on the immediate political tensions and their usually gruesome release. Weakened by these struggles for the throne and essentially a powerless pawn of generals by the time Kennedy leaves off in 935, the Abbasid caliphate nevertheless produced a munificent court culture. Reveling in its richness of ritual, poetry, song, and architecture, Kennedy accessibly presents his expertise on the Abbasids in this insightful history of the dynasty.
Contents: Revolution -- Mansur and his legacy -- Harun al-Rashid: the golden prime -- The war between the brothers -- Poetry and power at the early Abbasid Court -- Landscape with palaces -- The Harem -- Ma'mun to Mutawwakil -- Abbasid Court culture -- High noon in Samarra.
Curious Attractions: Essays on Fiction Writing - Spark, Debra
One of the many loaded questions Spark poses is, Why is there so little "happy fiction"? Readers may ask, how much fun can a book about writing fiction be? The answer: a whole lot with Spark as your guide. An adventurous novelist and an experienced teacher, she takes a personal, anecdotal approach to the challenge of creating fiction, lacing her illuminating essays with provocative quotes from writers as varied as Raymond Carver and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Spark writes about where stories come from, why openings and closings are so difficult to pull off, what we mean by style, the difference between sentiment and sentimentality, and how magic realism fares in North America. Her lines of inquiry are significant. Her observations about craft are fluent. And her ability to both analyze fiction and respect its mystery makes for a suitably frank and bemused perspective backed by unabashed wonder at the workings of the imagination and the undeniable power of literature. Spark's canny essays are a pleasure for readers and writers alike. Booklist

Lady on the Hill: How Biltmore Estate Became an American Icon - Covington , Howard E., Jr.
George Vanderbilt's "Gilded Age" Biltmore Estate, near Asheville , North Carolina , is the nation's largest private residence. However, it was once a terrible financial drain-banker David Rockefeller called it a "white elephant"-and no one gave its future a chance. Lady on the Hill is the remarkable account of how Vanderbilt's grandson, William A. V. Cecil, transformed the estate into an unparalleled example of private enterprise and historic preservation. This lively tale demonstrates how one man, in the face of considerable odds and using unconventional methods, achieved what everyone said could not be done, produced a profitable enterprise, and created the most visited historic house in America. from the publisher
Stolen Childhood: Slave Youth in Nineteenth-Century America - King, Wilma
It is difficult to imagine a more hellish childhood than one spent in slavery, and King's examination of the lives of slave children in the nineteenth century provides detailed documentation of just how bad things were. Using interviews with ex-slaves and other historical documents, King pieces together the slave child's experience. From the difficult plantation work they were expected to do to how they spent their play and leisure time to how they learned to read and write despite being forbidden to do so by plantation owners, King provides a jarring snapshot of children living in bondage. This compellingly written work is a testament to the strength and resilience of the children and their parents, who taught them necessary survival skills, self-respect, and love, despite nightmarish existences. A Girl Named Zippy - Kimmel, Haven
It's a cliché to say that a good memoir reads like a well-crafted work of fiction, but Kimmel's smooth, impeccably humorous prose evokes her childhood as vividly as any novel. Born in 1965, she grew up in Mooreland, Ind., a place that by some "mysterious and powerful mathematical principle" perpetually retains a population of 300, a place where there's no point learning the street names because it's just as easy to say, "We live at the four-way stop sign." Hers is less a formal autobiography than a collection of vignettes comprising the things a small child would remember: sick birds, a new bike, reading comics at the drugstore, the mean old lady down the street. The truths of childhood are rendered in lush yet simple prose; here's Zippy describing a friend who hates wearing girls' clothes: "Julie in a dress was like the rest of us in quicksand." Over and over, we encounter pearls of third-grade wisdom revealed in a child's assured voice: "There are a finite number of times one can safely climb the same tree in a single day"; or, regarding Jesus, "Everyone around me was flat-out in love with him, and who wouldn't be? He was good with animals, he loved his mother, and he wasn't afraid of blind people." Publishers Weekly

Dark Genius of Wall Street: The Misunderstood Life of Jay Gould - Renehan , Edward J., Jr.
Jay Gould was the robber baron's robber baron: the greatest financial and business genius of his time and also the most widely hated. Gould was the undisputed master of the nation's railroads and telegraph systems at a time when these were the fastest-growing new technologies of the age. He created new ways of manipulating markets, assembling capital and swallowing his competitors. Many of these methods are now standard practice; others were among the first practices prohibited by the SEC when it came into being in the 1930s. Biographer Renehan combines lively anecdotes with the rich social tapestry of the Gilded Age to create the first balanced biography of a figure whose stature in his era outranks that of Bill Gates, a man who was undoubtedly the greatest financial genius of his age--and one of the inventors of modern business.--From the publisher

Seven Types of Ambiguity - Perlman, Elliot
Australian novelist and barrister Perlman borrowed the title of this lengthy but fast-moving, reflective yet suspenseful novel from a book by the poet/critic William Empson , and both ambiguity and poetry shape this harrowing tale. Simon is the catalyst, a well-read and oddly charismatic laid-off grade-school teacher whose depression cues readers to Perlman's low-key but palpable indictment of a money-mad, morally bankrupt society. His obsession with Anna, the lost love of his life, sets in motion a series of unintended and unforeseen crises involving everything from insider stock tips to SIDS to prison violence. Drawn into the matrix of suffering is Anna herself; her stockbroker husband, Joe; their young son; as well as Angela, the most unlikely of good-hearted prostitutes; Alex, a compassionate but not always professional psychiatrist; and Mitch, Joe's richest client. Perlman succeeds in illuminating the ambiguity inherent in personal relationships, psychiatry, and the law by having each of his afflicted characters recount his or her version of the confounding betrayals, rapes, maladies, accidents, desperate measures, courtroom machinations, and deaths that transpire over the course of this smart and edgy novel. I Got Somebody in Staunton : Stories - Lewis, William Henry
Lewis crafts a thoughtful, appealing collection deeply concerned with the pride and pain of African-American heritage. The weight that troubled history brings to bear on the present is most powerfully recognized in the title story, in which a black man meets a white woman in a bar and agrees to drive her to Staunton , Va. , where he's headed to care for his dying uncle. It's a fraught encounter haunted by the man's recollection of his uncle's stories about lynchings . " Rossonian Days," which follows a jazz band on its way to a gig in Denver , is a passionate, poetic riff on the evolution of jazz and its place in African-American culture. Lewis also explores more personal histories, as in the exquisite "Shades," in which a 14-year-old boy mingling with the crowd at a blues festival finally lays eyes on the father he has never met. "In a circle of loud men, all holding beer, all howling in laughter... stood a large man in a worn gray suit tugging his tie jokingly like a noose.... I looked at myself in the reflection of [his] mirrored lenses and thought, So this is me ." Though Lewis's plots can be a bit thin and the basic footwork of getting around in a story can feel a little clumsy, the cumulative effect of these 10 pieces is unquestionably powerful. The Protector's War - Stirling , S. M.
Sequel to Dies the Fire . The Bearkillers and Clan Mackenzie have spent the eight years since the Change, which left the world without such conveniences as electricity and gunpowder, carving out a home for themselves in the rich farmland of Oregon 's Willamette Valley . The peace they enjoy is fragile, thanks to the Protector of Portland, Norman Arminger , who is ready to wage war to control the valley's farmland with methods derived from a medieval warlord: slavery, feudal oppression, and thugs running his army. The arrival of British survivors on a Tasmanian ship complicates matters, especially when they encounter Arminger first. The Mackenzie (i.e., clan leader), Juniper, brings a mystical attitude to the confrontation, and it begins to seem as though in this world without familiar technology, magic might in fact be just around the corner. The Bearkillers , meanwhile, are ever more influenced by Tolkien, thanks to the obsession of certain younger members. Stirling 's blending of fiction and history produces a strange, hybrid civilization, in which the confrontation between warlord and mystic is viscerally satisfying. Booklist
A Meeting at Corvallis - Stirling , S. M.
Concluding volume in the trilogy begun in Dies the Fire and The Protector's War . Ten years after modern technology and most of the human race go extinct, what was Oregon is divided among three societies. Ex-pilot and professional survivor Mike Havel rules around Salem . Juniper Mackenzie holds sway as bard and high priestess of her clan in the southern Willamette Valley . Self-styled protector Norman Arminger is building a medieval empire based on a social core of former street-gang members in Portland . The incompatibility of Mike's and Juniper's realms with the protector's ambitions as well as those of his consort, the ferocious Lady Sandra, contributes to rising--then overflowing--tension. Before long, Clan Mackenzie has captured the protector's daughter, and Lady Sandra will stop at nothing to get her back. The ensuing maze of intrigue, diplomacy, and battle (with a wonderful variety of weapons ingeniously exploiting archaic technology) comes up to Stirling 's highest standards for pacing, world building, action, and strong characterizations, particularly of women. Postholocaust settings aren't to everybody's taste, but readers entranced by Dies the Fire (2004) and The Protector's War (2005), the first two books in Stirling 's multivolume contribution to the subgenre, will be happy to be here, in the midst of a major work by an authentic master of alternate history. - Booklist

The Encyclopedia of North Carolina - Powell, William S.
Powell, professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, spent 15 years compiling this first single-volume encyclopedia of the Tarheel State . The encyclopedia is intended to serve "those who love and live in North Carolina ," and it is clearly a product of great affection as well as scholarship. The encyclopedia consists of more than 2,000 signed, alphabetically arranged entries written by 600 contributors. There are brief entries ( Cardinal, Cheerwine ); substantive articles ( Biltmore House, Pirates, Pottery ); and in-depth surveys ( American Revolution, Lumbee Indians, Mining ). The expected historical, political, and economic topics ( Civil rights movement, Wine and winemaking ) are included, but also here are articles about food ( Barbecue, Okra, Ramps, Scuppernong grape ); popular dance ( Buck dancing, Clogging, Step dancing ); and words with North Carolina etymology ( Hooker, Mooning ) that make the encyclopedia fascinating to browse. Four hundred illustrations and 22 maps enhance the articles. Many articles conclude with references that would have been otherwise difficult to identify. The detailed index pulls together scattered information on broad topics such as music and railroads. - Booklist
Encyclopedia of Appalachia - Abramson, Rudy
The encyclopedia adopts the 2005 definition used by the Appalachian Regional Commission, describing Appalachia as consisting of 410 counties in 13 states from Mississippi to New York . The organization of the encyclopedia is thematic. There are five broad subject areas: "The Landscape," "The People," "Work and the Economy," "Cultural Traditions," and "Institutions." Each section begins with a five- to six-page introduction and is then subdivided into smaller subsections. "Work and the Economy" includes "Agriculture"; "Business, Industry and Technology"; "Labor"; "Tourism"; and "Transportation." Each subsection is an A-Z of people, places, and things. The perception of Appalachia has been tarnished with numerous social, environmental, and economic problems, and the editors confront these as well as covering the positive aspects of the area. The 2,000 entries, written by more than 1,000 contributors from academia and journalism, include stereotypical topics ( Feuds and violence , Hillbilly ) but also subjects such as urban Appalachia and cultural institutions like the Pittsburgh Symphony. The entries are concise, well written, and readable both for the layperson and the scholar. - Booklist
