Nutrition Analysis

A Carolina Day School Library Reference Guide

Good news! Most of this report can be completed using your biology textbook, encyclopedias, and a couple of web sites.

Ms. Bartsch recommends CyberDiet at www.cyberdiet.com as a beginning place for your nutritional analysis. There are others on the free web as well. Part of your assignment is to find them if you feel they will help your paper.

Following are some library and other resources that may help you.

Encyclopedia Britannica and The World Book. REF 031

The Handbook of Nutritional Value of Foods in Common Units. REF 641.1 Ada 1986

"The largest, most comprehensive source of food nutrition information ever compiled. Prepared for the USDA at a cost of millions of dollars, this exhaustive study is presented in two mammoth tables: one measuring nutrients in commonly used household measures and market units of food, the other measuring fatty acids. Includes datas on approximately 1500 foods…gives values for water, food energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, five mineral elements (calcium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, and potassium), five vitamins (vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid), total saturated fatty acids, and two unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid and linoleic acid)."

Body by Design: From the Digestive System to the Skeleton. REF 612 NAG

Take a look at the digestive system chapter in volume one.

The Human Body: An Illustrated Guide to its Structure, Function, and Disorders. REF 612 HUM

Wonderful illustrations. Check out "The Breakdown of Food" in the digestive chapter.

Foods That Harm, Foods That Heal: An A-Z Guide to Safe and Healthy Eating. 613.2 Foo

Take a look at the entries for protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, water, etc.

The Food and Drug Administration revises its dietary guidelines every five years. The next revision is scheduled for 2005. Here are two FDA sites with nutrition information:

MLA Documentation & Citation Guide

A fine guide with examples, brought to you by Bedford/St. Martin's, a college publisher. Note that they use bullets instead of the hanging indentations since indentations are very difficult in web pages. Use the hanging indentations for your CDS papers.
