Trimester overview

In the fist unit of study, students will develop an understanding of how we form notions of identity about ourselves and the world around us. They will explore some essential questions: Who am I as an individual? As a learner? How do I know? Who are we as a school community made up of individuals? In language arts, students will read and write poetry and memoir- both excellent vehicles for discovering and expressing self. Reading and discussion of The Giver will provide a great opportunity to explore the relationship between individual freedoms and responsibility to community. In social studies, students will learn about local governments and how they make decisions. They will research a current local issue and learn about the governments role in it.They will investigate what make Western North Carolina a unique region. In addition, students will lay the foundation th thrive as individual middle school students by learning to use systems such as the writing process, study methods, and cooperative learning.  Throughout the year they will practice those skills as well as many others: critical and creative thinking, grammar, writing mechanics, research, and communication among others.

A little bit about me...

I grew up in Ohio and received my BA in education at Bowling Green State University. I then taught for five years in Springfield, Ohio. After some convincing from friends, I decided to spend one of my summers in Maine. It was there that I meet my amazing husband. We were soon married. We have taught in South Carolina, Virginia, and now here in North Carolina. John and I enjoy teaching together here at Carolina Day School. We have two fun and energetic twin boys. They keep us and their teachers very busy. This is my fifteenth year of teaching and my seventh year at CDS. I love working here. I teach language arts and social studies. I am also the middle school assistant counselor and activities director. The students and staff are fantastic. Their enthusiasm and dedication has taught me to work hard, play often, and most importantly to have fun.
