Strategic Plan

INTRODUCTION

In the summer of 1999, the Board of Trustees formed a strategic planning committee to prepare a plan that will focus our attention on the few critical challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of Carolina Day School over the next ten years and more. The committee of sixteen people - present and past board members, administrators and faculty, parents and past parents - reviewed an extensive collection of background material. This included input from hundreds of CDS constituents: issues identified by a visioning task force, a profile of school performance developed for the SACS accrediting process, demographic data, issues identified during the Head Search process, parent and faculty surveys, and recommendations by the administrators on school size and a master site plan. The result is this Strategic Plan.

The Committee recommends that the strategy and goals in this plan be reviewed each year by the Board and the administrators and revised as progress is made or conditions change so that it is always kept current. Each year, the Board and the Head should then develop the specific tasks and responsibilities to be accomplished during the next year to reach our strategic goals, in the form of an Annual Operating Plan , Annual Board Goals and a Strategic Financial Plan. Taken together, these plans will move CDS to the next level - the incredible school we believe it is close to becoming.

GENERAL STRATEGY

The strategy we recommend is driven by mission, not marketing. It expresses what we stand for as a school, trusting that if we have done our job well, "the students will come." We believe that we will begin to reach greatness when we give students an outstanding academic preparation for college and prepare them to be leaders, people of good character, and models of responsible citizenship, who have a passion for learning and the ability to use knowledge wisely and compassionately.
